It borders on Russia.
Its total area is 26 700 km2, and its
population is 2 673 800.
Luhansk is the region’s centre.
The Donets River, which flows in a
southeastern direction, divides the
region into two distinct zones.
The northern part consists of
a hilly plain rising from the Donets
Lowland to spurs of the Central
Upland.

The southern region consists of
the Donets Ridge, an undulating
plain with an elevation of up to
200—250 metres dissected by river
valleys and ravines.
The largest river is the Donets with its
tributaries — the Luhan and the Velyka
Kamianka on the right bank and the
Krasna, the Borova, the Aidar, and the
Derkul on the left.
There are also lakes there.
The region is located in foreststeppe
and steppe zones.
The region is rich in lignite and natural
gas deposits, as well as limestone,
chalk, and clay.
The climate is continental: summers
are hot and dry, and winters are cold
and snowless.
Ukrainians constitute 53 per cent of the
population, and Russians — 43 per cent.
It is an industrial region.
The main industries are the fuel
industry, machinebuilding and
metalworking industries, the chemical
industry, light industry and food
processing.
The biggest industrial centres are: Lu
hansk, Lysychansk, Krasnyi Luch.
Agriculture specializes in the winter
wheat and corn growing.

Animal husbandry is a very important
branch of agriculture.
Horticulture and vinegrowing are
also developed there.
The region has a very dense network
of railways and highways.
Many famous people were born in the
Luhansk Region.
They are V. Dal, V. Liakhov, O. Bakh
mutsky, and others.

Донець, що тече в південносхідно
му напрямку, поділяє область на дві
частини.
Північна частина складається
з горбкуватої рівнини, що підніма
ється від Донецької низовини до
вершин Центральної височини.
Південну частину місцевості скла
дає Донецький кряж — горбкувата
рівнина, висотою 200—250 м над
рівнем моря, з багатьма річковими
долинами, ущелинами і ярами.
Найбільша ріка — Донець із при
токами Лугань і Велика Кам’янка
з правого боку, Борова, Айдар і Дер
куль — з лівого.

Тут є також озера.
Область розташовується в лісосте
повій і степовій зонах.
Область багата на поклади бурого
вугілля і природного газу, а також
вапняку, крейди і глини.
Клімат континентальний: літо жарке
і сухе, зима холодна і малосніжна.

Українці складають 53 % населен
ня, росіяни — 43 %.
Це індустріальна область.
Основні галузі господарства — па
ливна, машинобудівна
і металообробна, хімічна, легка
і харчова промисловість.

Найбільші промислові центри — Лу
ганськ, Лисичанськ, Красний Луч.
Сільське господарство спеціал
ізується на вирощуванні озимої
пшениці і кукурудзи.
Важливою галуззю сільського гос
подарства є тваринництво.
Розвинені також садівництво і вино
градарство.
В області є численні залізниці та ав
томагістралі.
Багато відомих людей народилися
в Луганській області.
