The city was founded in the second
part of the 12th century.
The first mention of Chernivtsi in the
chronicles occurred in 1207.
In the middle of the 14th century it be
longed to Moldavia and stood on its
border with Poland.
In 1744 it became a part of Austria,
and since 1917 — a part of Romania.
In 1940 the Southern Bukovyna joined
the Ukrainian Republic.



The Prut divides the city into two parts.
Chernivtsi is a green city with the
Botanical Gardens, the arboretum,
8 parks and many public gardens.
The architectural monuments
are the building of the Chernivtsi
University, the former residence of
the Bukovynian metropolitan, the city
hall, St Nicholas’s Church (1607) and
the building of the theatre.
Chernivtsi is the city of theatres, muse
ums and libraries.
It is famous for the Chernivtsi
University, the Medical University,
the Institute of Trade and Economy,
12 technical secondary schools and
many scientificresearch institutions.
The Kobylanska Music and Drama
Theatre, the puppet theatre and the
philharmonic society are very popular
among the people.
In Chernivtsi the writer Yu. Fedkovych,
the composer V. Ivasiuk, the singer
M. Yaremchuk were born.
The museums are worth visiting.
They are the Yu. Fedkovych Memorial
Museum, the O. Kobylanska Memorial
Museum, an art museum, and
a regionalhistory museum.
The major branches of industry in Cher
nivtsi include light industry, the food
processing, the machinebuilding and
metalworking industries.
The wellknown enterprises include
the Fedkovich fine goods factory,
the “Bukovyna” souvenir factory, the
furniture factory and many others.

Чернівці розташовані в Західній
Україні на обох берегах ріки Прут.

Місто займає площу 153 км2 і розді
лене на 3 міських райони.
Чисельність населення складає
257 300 жителів.
Місто було засновано в другій поло
вині 12 сторіччя.
Перше згадування в літописі припа
дає на 1207 рік.
У середині 14 сторіччя місто належа
ло Молдавії і знаходилося на кордо
ні з Польщею.
У 1744 р. воно стало частиною Ав
стрії, а з 1917 — частиною Румунії.
У 1940 р. Південна Буковина при
єдналася до Української Республіки.

Прут поділяє місто на дві частини.
Чернівці — зелене місто з Ботаніч
ним садом, дендрарієм, 8 парками
і багатьма скверами.
До пам’яток архітектури належать
будинок державного університету,
що був резиденцією митрополита
Буковини, ратуша, церква Святого
Миколи (1607 р.) і будинок театру.

Чернівці — місто театрів, музеїв,
бібліотек.
Прославленими є університет, ме
дичний університет, торговоеконо
мічний інститут, 12 технікумів і бага
то науководослідних інститутів.

Великою популярністю користують
ся музичнодраматичний театр ім.
О. Кобилянської, ляльковий театр
і філармонія.
Чернівці — батьківщина письмен
ника Ю. Федьковича, композитора
В. Івасюка, співака М. Яремчука.
Гідні відвідування музеї міста.

билянської, художній і краєзнавчий
музеї.

Чернівці відіграють легка, харчова,
машинобудівна і металообробна
промисловості.

виробів ім. Ю. Федьковича, підприє

вий комбінат і багато інших.
