The city is divided into two districts.
Chernihiv is one of the most ancient
cities of Ukraine.
It was founded in the 7th century.
It was named by the prince Chorny.

The first mention of Chernihiv in the
chronicles occurred in 907.
The city was incorporated into Kievan
Rus in the 9th century and became
one of the most important and
wealthiest cities of the realm.
In the 14th century it was
incorporated into the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania.
In 1503 it came under Moskovy’s rule.

During this period the city was very
enlarged.
Then it was transferred to Poland and
in 1654 it became a part of Russia.
The old centre of the city is called “Di
tynets”.

There are some historical monuments
such as the Cathedral of the Trans
figuration (11th century), the Borys
and Hlib Cathedral (1120—1123), the
Catherine Church (sanctified in 1715).
There is also a famous Yeletsky
Monastery there.
The main branches of industry are
foodprocessing, light industry and
woodworking, the building materials
industry.
The major industrial enterprises
include the industrial association
“Pozhmachina”, “Chernihivmebel”,
“Tiutiun”, machinebuilding plants,
and a woodworking plant.
The museums of the city are worth
visiting.
There is a historical museum, the
M. Kotsiubynsky LiteraryMemorial
Museum, and an art museum.
There is also the Music and Drama Thea
tre, a young spectator’s theatre, and
the philharmonic society in the city.
Chernigiv is the city of education and
science.
The schoolleavers can enter the peda
gogical and technological universities
and 8 technical secondary schools.
There are a lot of scientificresearch
and planning institutions.

Чернігів розташований на високому
правому березі Десни.
Місто займає площу 64 км2,
кількість населення
301 100 жителів.
Місто розділене на два райони.
Чернігів — одне з найдавніших міст
України.
Він був заснований у 7 сторіччі.
Свою назву одержав від князя Чор
ного.
Перша згадка, відповідно до літопи
су, припадає на 907 рік.
Місто увійшло до складу Київської
Русі в 9 столітті і стало одним з най
більш важливих і багатих міст дер
жави.
У 14 сторіччі Чернігів належав до Ве
ликого Литовського князівства.

У 1503 році став частиною Москов
ської держави.
У цей період місто було розширене.

Потім воно відійшло до Польщі,
а в 1654 році стало частиною Росії.
Старий центр міста називається
«Дитинець».

До історичних пам’яток архітекту
ри належать Преображенський
собор, Борисоглебський собор,
Катерининська церква (освячена
в 1715 році).
Є також знаменитий Єлецький мо
настир.
Основні галузі господарства: харчо
ва, легка, деревообробна промис
ловість, виробництво будівельних
матеріалів.
Серед найбільших підприємств
слід назвати: «ПО «Пожежмашина»,
«Чернігівмеблі», «Тютюн», підприєм
ства машинобудування і деревооб
робний завод.
Гідні відвідування музеї міста.

Тут є історичний музей, літератур
номеморіальний музей М. Коцю
бинського.
Тут є також драмтеатр, театр юного
глядача і філармонія.

Чернігів — місто освіти і науки.

Випускники шкіл вступають до педа
гогічного й технологічного універ
ситетів і 8 технікумів.
Тут є багато науководослідних
інститутів і проектних бюро.
